A Photo A Day: Day 5

…my heart is a little heavy.

“Black Heart”

“I used to think that the world was doing it to me, and that the world owed me some thing. And that the… either the conservatives or the socialists or the fascists or the communists or the Christians or the Jews or the fascists were doing something to me. I don’t think that anymore, ’cause I found out it doesn’t fucking work. Most assholes just accept what it is anyway and get on with it, right? So for the few of us who did question what was going on, I have found out personally, not for the whole world, that-there’s no separating; we’re all one.”

A Photo A Day: Day 4

Today’s photo. Did not expect before shooting that this would become my photo of the day, but I am in love with it!

Aside from a little cropping, this photo has no further editing.

I’m not quite sure how to describe it. I just know that I FEEL it.

A Photo A Day: Day 3

Forget what I said about this weekend being easy. Today was a tough day for photos.

I was exhausted by the end of it, and underwhelmed.

To wind down, I let myself have fun with the editing, and now I am undecided on which photo to post.

So, here are my top 3 from today. Unfortunately, the photo I was counting on to turn out the best did not make it.

Anyhow… Hope you enjoy!

While dragons aren't typically my thing. I'd say this is the best shot of the day.

But this one is totally me! This is my fave!

A Photo A Day

Finally have a challenge for the month of August: take A Photo a Day and post it on WordPress!

With a newly bought camera collecting dust and a blog needing some attention, coming up with this one was a no brainer.

Really hoping this will keep me pretty attached to both for the remainder of the month. So, stick around!

Can someone tell that girl her lens cap is on?? Sigh. Still a novice.

Burpees on the Hour UPDATE!!!

The month of July is already gone, and it’s been about a month since I have last posted on here. This was definitely a challenging month for me, but definitely a lot of good things to share! Be on the watch for it!

Before all that, however, I should let you know how the Burpees on the Hour challenge went, as promised.

It was pretty awesome, but I did have my problems with it. Oh, well! That’s what made it a challenge!

Reasons why it was awesome:

  • I was way more prepared to do burpees the next time at the box. Little did they know…
  • I was inspired to look up how-to videos on the web-leading me to discover that the push-up is not required for the traditional burpee! Whaaaat!?
  • It really wasn’t so bad. And I am referring to both the workout and the challenge. Once I watched a few videos, I started focusing more on my jump and less on the push-up. Actually, I stopped incorporating the push-up completely, and just made sure my chest always touched the ground. Easy, yet still an effective workout. Also, I didn’t really think of how rarely I’d be chilling at home. I kept myself busy this month, which equated to only a few days with burpees out of the month.

Reasons why it wasn’t so awesome:

  •  Well, there was only one: monotony. While doing burpees got less challenging, they also got boring. It basically got to the point that I wanted to break my challenge, because I would feel like changing up the movement. I never actually broke it, but for next time, I am going to keep in mind to do like the blogger and her kids who switched up the exercises.

And there you have it! 🙂

Now it’s time for a new challenge. With some other projects in the way, and with the countdown to the semester already started, I totally wasn’t thinking of it. I’m going to need to come up with something soon!

How are your challenges going?

Burpees on the Hour

So, yesterday morning I woke up to find two new blog posts in my email from some blogs that I follow.

One was about a blogger’s resolution to do “Chin Ups for Days,” which from my understanding  means that she will attempt to do the same number of chin-ups that equaled the date. So, like–one chin-up for July 1st, two for July 2nd, and so on.

The other was about another blogger’s attempt to “Every Hour on the Hour” do some sort of exercise with her kids to keep the body moving, even if they are just relaxing at home.

Now, again, I had just woken up at this time. I had grabbed my phone and checked my email out of habit, but it was still to early for me to seriously think of movement. So, I hit “like” after reading, then went on with my day.

Later that evening I was at the box, as weekday evenings are now CrossFit Prep Course time. (Yes! I’m giving this another try!) The WOD wasn’t too bad. We held our handstands, did some ring dips… But then, we had to do the dreaded burpee.

O.k. I don’t know what it is-but burpees make my soul cringe! I gave those burpees all I got yesterday, but I still couldn’t shake my dislike for the exercise. As I worked through 25, I reflected on what I had read that morning and I’ve now come up with my own resolution.

For the next 30 days, whenever I am just chilling at home, I am going to get up every hour and do the same number of burpees that correspond with the time. So, it’s 5 p.m. right now–I’ve got to get up and do five.

Here I am checking out my stance as I go down. I am so anal retentive, I swear!

Do I really want to do burpees every hour? That last five wasn’t so bad. It’s the every hour part that sounds a little more challenging, but it’s worth it if it will make them easier.

Actually, this reminds me of  a really good quote,

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” -Aristotle

Perhaps by making a habit of doing them when I’m at home, my burpees will get better! I’ll certainly let you know whether they do or they don’t.

Anyway, I thought I’d share as I’ve been dying to write a “movement” related post. To be in my best shape is one of my main goals for this year and I intend to keep sharing what’s motivating me and what’s working! Hopefully, someone else also gets inspired!

Would you care to join me in my burpee challenge? What fitness challenge do  you want to take on this month? This year?

A Non-Denominational Kind of Lent

I was on the Lululemon blog, reading up on goal setting, when I encountered this idea. The idea that I can have 30 days of “Lent,” despite the fact that I have no religious affiliation. That’s because this Lent of which I speak does not involve the kind of self-denial that a church might recommend. Instead, the effort is about committing to something for 30 days, whether that involves a dose of healthy self-denial or not. It’s the 30 day challenge with a catchier name-YES. I have actually known that I wanted to take on the whole 30 day challenge thing (or in my case, Lent thing) even before my peruse thru the Lululemon blog. I think it can be a great avenue for new discoveries, and it’s a simple way to make life a little more interesting! Here are just a few of the challenges I have considered taking on:

  • Take at least one photo every day
  • Study a topic you would like to master each day
  • Wake up early each day
  • No complaining for 30 days
  • Cook a meal each day
  • Write down what I am grateful for each day

However, these are just possibilities, of course! This list could go on! (Ultimately, I chose to start with Danne’s idea to be a bookworm for a month). I had initially wanted to take on a few challenges all at once, but I was quickly overwhelmed by the thought of it all. So, I finally started off with one, and that’s what I would recommend for anyone else who wants to get started with this.  Begin with one. The last thing you want to see happen is that you gave up all your challenges, because you couldn’t keep up with them. Just get your feet wet, then see where it takes you! Anyway, don’t they say that multi-tasking is truly inefficient? Interested in a 30 day challenge? Tell me, what sort of things might you like to try?
